Alright, so I got this idea to remake the Yves Saint Laurent YSL LE CARRé SATCHEL BAG. Yeah, the fancy one, the classic style. I mean, those things are pricey, right? But I figured, why not give it a shot myself?
First off, I started by looking at a bunch of pictures of the bag online. I wanted to get a real good feel for it, you know? The shape, the size, the little details, everything. This bag, the “Le Carre” as they call it, it’s got this simple, boxy look. Real classy, if you ask me.
Then, I got to sketching. I grabbed some paper and just started drawing out what I saw in the pictures. This part took a while, gotta get those proportions right. It’s not just about making it look like the YSL bag, but also about making it functional, something I’d actually use.
Next up, I had to pick the material. These YSL bags, they’re made of some high-quality leather, so I needed something that felt good and would last. I went to a local fabric store, and let me tell you, there are a lot of choices! I finally settled on a nice, sturdy piece of leather that I thought would work well.
After that, the real work began. Cutting the leather, that was a challenge. You gotta be precise, one wrong cut and you can mess up the whole thing. I used a rotary cutter and a ruler, measured everything twice before cutting once. It was slow going, but I managed to get all the pieces cut out.
- Sewing was the next big step. Now, I’m no expert with a sewing machine, but I know the basics. I started with the smaller parts, getting a feel for how the leather behaved under the needle. It’s a lot different than sewing fabric, let me tell you.
- Then, I moved on to the bigger pieces, slowly putting the bag together. This part was like a puzzle, figuring out how everything fit together.
- The flap, the sides, the bottom, it all had to be sewn just right. There were times I had to rip out seams and start over, but hey, that’s part of the process, right?
Adding the hardware was another adventure. The YSL bag has this distinctive buckle, and finding something similar was tough. I ended up going to a specialty store and found one that was pretty close. Attaching it to the bag, that was a delicate operation. Had to make sure it was secure but also looked good.
Finally, after a lot of work, I finished the bag. It wasn’t perfect, mind you. There were a few imperfections here and there, but overall, I was pretty happy with it. It looked like a YSL Le Carre bag, at least to me it did. And the best part? I made it myself.
My Takeaway
This whole project, it was a learning experience. I learned a lot about working with leather, about sewing, about design. And I proved to myself that I could take on a challenging project and see it through. Would I do it again? Maybe. It was a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. Plus, now I have a pretty cool bag that I can say I made myself. And you know what they say about YSL bags, they’re a good investment, and they last a long time. Maybe mine will too, who knows?
