Hey everyone, it’s your boy back again with another project. Today, I’m diving into the world of watches, specifically the OMEGA Speedmaster Skywalker X-33. I’ve been eyeing this beauty for a while now, and I finally decided to pull the trigger and start working on a replica. Yeah, you heard that right, a replica. I thought it would be a fun challenge to see if I could capture the essence of this space-age timepiece. I’m not gonna lie, It is really good-looking!

Getting Started

First things first, I needed to really study the watch. I spent hours looking at pictures online, reading every article I could find, and watching videos. I basically became obsessed with the X-33. I discovered it’s made from grade 2 titanium, which is both light and strong, perfect for space travel I guess. It’s got a 45mm case, which is pretty big, and it’s about 15.1mm thick. It’s not just a pretty face though, this watch is packed with functions. I learned that it’s powered by something called the OMEGA calibre 5619, a quartz movement that’s apparently super accurate. It’s even got a special circuit that adjusts for temperature changes. I was like, wow! This is serious tech, but not any circuit related I have done before.

The Design

The X-33 has both analog hands and digital displays, which was a little intimidating at first. I mean, I’ve worked with mechanical watches before, but this was a whole different beast. I focused on getting the look of the case right first. It’s got this matte finish that I really dig, and it’s supposed to be low reflectivity, whatever that means. I found out this watch was actually designed with input from astronauts, which is pretty cool. It has all these features like mission elapsed time (MET) and alarms that are specifically for space missions. That is something I did not think of at the very beginning.

The Build

I started with the case. Finding grade 2 titanium was a bit of a hassle, but I managed to get my hands on some scraps. I then went to a friend’s home and used the tools in his garage to shape the case. It took a few tries to get it right, and let me tell you, working with titanium is tough. I used a lot of files to get that matte finish. The whole process was a pain in the butt. I tried to find the quartz movement online, but that is very hard, so I just got a regular one to replace it.

The dial was another challenge. I had to figure out how to combine the analog and digital elements. For the digital display, I thought about using some small LED screens, but that turned out to be way too complicated. In the end, I just kept it simple with the analog hands. I’m not gonna lie, the hands are not so good-looking.

Putting it all together was a real test of patience. There were so many small parts, and I had to be super careful not to mess anything up. I definitely messed up a few times, but I learned a lot along the way. It took me several weeks of tinkering, but I finally got it to a point where I was happy with it.

The Result

So, is my replica an exact copy of the OMEGA Speedmaster Skywalker X-33? Heck no! But it’s got the general vibe, and I’m pretty proud of it. It’s definitely a conversation starter. I learned a ton about watchmaking and gained a new appreciation for the real X-33. It’s a truly impressive piece of engineering. I just want to show the pictures of it here, but unfortunately, I cannot.

Would I do it again? Maybe, maybe not. It was a fun project, but it was also a lot of work. I might try to replicate another watch in the future, but for now, I’m just gonna enjoy wearing my “Space-Age” creation.

Alright, that’s it for this project. Hope you enjoyed the story. Catch you in the next one!
