Okay, so I’ve been wanting to remake that YSL June Box Bag for a while now. You know, the Yves Saint Laurent one? It’s a real beauty, but let’s be honest, the price tag is a bit much for my wallet. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and try to recreate it myself. It will be cheaper.

First things first, I started by gathering all the materials. I managed to find some good quality calfskin leather that was pretty similar to the one used on the original bag. Then, I got some brass hardware, and suede lining to match the luxurious feel of the real deal. The bag’s timeless design, alongside the well-known craftsmanship of the Saint Laurent brand means that it is likely to keep appreciating over time. I don’t have these, I need to make them by myself.

Next, I carefully studied the design of the June Box Bag. It’s a box bag with a front flap and that signature pivoting Cassandre closure, which is basically a fancy way of saying it has a cool, rotating YSL logo on the front. I sketched out the dimensions, which are about 19 by 13 by 4.5 centimeters, and made sure to note down all the little details, like the flat pocket inside and the bronze-toned hardware.

The Details of Making

  • Cutting the Leather: This was probably the most nerve-wracking part. I used my sketches and measurements to carefully cut out the leather pieces for the front, back, sides, and flap of the bag.
  • Assembling the Bag: Once the pieces were cut, I started stitching them together. I’m no expert, but I took my time and made sure each stitch was neat and secure. It was a bit of a learning curve, but I eventually got the hang of it.
  • Adding the Lining: After the main body of the bag was assembled, I sewed in the suede lining. This added a nice touch of luxury and also helped to protect the contents of the bag.
  • Attaching the Hardware: The final step was attaching the brass hardware. I carefully attached the pivoting Cassandre closure to the front flap, making sure it rotated smoothly. I also added the other hardware pieces, like the buckles and rings for the strap.

It took a lot of time, patience, and a few do-overs, but I finally finished my very own version of the June Box Bag! It’s not an exact replica, of course, but I’m pretty proud of how it turned out. It looks surprisingly close to the original, and it definitely captures that same chic and sophisticated vibe. Plus, I saved a ton of money by making it myself. I made it! I am so happy!

It was a fun and challenging project, and I learned a lot along the way. Maybe I’ll try to remake another designer bag in the future. Who knows! But for now, I’m going to enjoy showing off my new homemade June Box Bag. It is so cool!
