Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with watches again, and this time I wanted to try my hand at remaking a really fancy one – the Patek Philippe Calatrava 5088/100P-001. This thing is a real beauty, all platinum and hand-engraved, you know, the kind that costs a fortune. I figured, why not see if I can make something that looks kind of like it, just for fun?

Getting Started

First, I needed a base watch. I picked up a cheap automatic watch from online. It wasn’t anything special, just something that had a similar shape to the Calatrava. I didn’t want to spend too much since this was just an experiment.

Prepping the Watch

Once I got the watch, the first thing I did was take it apart. Carefully, of course! I removed the strap, popped open the back, and gently took out the movement and dial. I needed a clean slate to work with.

The Design

The real Calatrava 5088 has this intricate, hand-engraved design all over it. It’s super detailed and looks like it took ages to do. I knew I couldn’t replicate that exactly, but I wanted to get a similar vibe.

  • I sketched out some patterns on paper first, trying to mimic the flowery, leafy look of the original.
  • Then, I transferred my chosen design onto the watch case using a fine-tipped marker. This was just a guide for me to follow.

Engraving (Sort Of)

Now, I don’t have any fancy engraving tools, so I had to improvise. I used a small rotary tool with a fine point to basically scratch the design into the metal. It’s not as deep or clean as real engraving, but it gives a similar effect from a distance.

  • I went over the marker lines slowly and carefully, trying to keep my hand steady.
  • It took a while, and my hand got pretty tired, but I think it turned out okay.

Painting the Dial

The original watch has a black dial, so I painted mine black too. I used some model paint and a tiny brush.

  • I applied a few thin coats, letting each one dry completely before adding the next.
  • I also added some simple white markers for the hours, just to make it easier to read.

Putting it Back Together

After all that, it was time to put the watch back together. I carefully placed the movement and dial back into the case, secured the back, and reattached a new black leather strap I bought.

The Final Result

And that’s it! It’s not a perfect replica, not even close, but it was a fun project. It looks kind of like the real Patek Philippe Calatrava 5088, at least from a distance. I learned a lot about watchmaking and design in the process. Plus, I got a unique watch out of it, even if it’s a bit rough around the edges. It was definitely worth the time and effort!
