Okay, so, I’ve always been a huge fan of those fancy Patek Philippe watches, especially the Calatrava 5088/100P-001. It’s just so clean and classic, you know? That’s why I decided to try and remake it. I thought, “How hard could it be?” Famous last words, right?
First, I spent hours just looking at pictures of the real deal. I wanted to get every little detail right. The Calatrava 5088/100P-001 is pretty much the definition of a perfect dress watch, and it’s also Patek Philippe’s main watch, so I knew I had to do it * call it the “Calatrava” because it’s named after Patek Philippe’s logo. Pretty cool, huh?
Then came the fun part – or so I thought. I started gathering materials. This was tricky. I obviously wasn’t going to use real platinum, so I had to find something that looked similar but didn’t cost a fortune. I ended up going with some kind of polished metal. It wasn’t perfect, but it did the trick.
- Looked for materials that matched the original look.
- Decided on a polished metal to mimic the platinum case.
- Tried to source hands and a dial that were as close as possible to the original.
Next, I tried to make the watch face. Oh boy, was that a challenge. I’m no watchmaker, let me tell you. But I gave it my best shot. I tried to copy that Clous de Paris, or hobnail, pattern which is all over the original Calatrava. It was way harder than it looked. I used some simple tools that I found online, but let’s just say my version wasn’t exactly up to Patek Philippe standards.
Putting it all together was another story. I almost threw the whole thing out the window more than once. The tiny screws, the delicate hands, the whole thing was just so fiddly. But I kept at it, and finally, after many, many attempts, I had something that kind of resembled the Calatrava 5088/100P-001.
The Outcome
It’s definitely not perfect. It doesn’t have that refined look that the real Patek Philippe has. It’s a little rough around the edges, and the dial is nowhere near as intricate. But you know what? I made it. And I learned a whole lot in the process. I have a whole new appreciation for watchmakers now. They are like magicians. The stuff they do is incredible!
Would I do it again? Probably not. It was way more work than I expected. But I’m still glad I tried. Now I have a little reminder of that beautiful Patek Philippe Calatrava 5088/100P-001 on my wrist, even if it’s just a homemade version. It is not perfect, but it’s mine!
